Scuba diving with seals in Wollongong

Seals’ playful antics are entertaining scuba divers as they frolic around one of Wollongongs’ Five Islands.

Abyss Dive Master, Patty Minton, believes that Winter is an ideal time for divers to interact with our flippered friends as the seal population at Martin Island peaks to 300 during the colder months.

“I had one of them come and give me a kiss on the forehead today which was a lot of fun,” Ms Minton said.

Abyss Scuba Diving has been visiting the Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals for 15 years and speculates that the seals prefer Martin Island because it is the furthest from land and is most exposed to the open ocean.
