Scuba divers carve pumpkins underwater, plus other odd Halloween traditions

Pumpkin carving is a long-standing Halloween tradition, but seldom has anyone thought to try it underwater. On Sunday, in the Florida Keys, a group of scuba divers took their pumpkins to the ocean floor, carving faces and other designs to celebrate Halloween.

Meanwhile, people across the US found a host of other interesting ways to kick off Autumn. In Salt Lake City, Utah, pumpkin growers managed to turn their largest crops into boats for a paddling contest. In total, twelve giant pumpkins, together weighing more than 4,000kg took part in the race.

The competitive spirit extended to Aurora, Colorado too, where locals designed lots of different contraptions to toss their pumpkins as far as possible. Most of the competitors seemed to favour various types of catapults, flinging their pumpkins to the cheers of onlookers.

And in Ohio, people gathered to get a glimpse of some of the state's largest pumpkins during a festival in Circleville. Report by Mark Morris.
