Anacapa SCUBA Diving 7-6-2013 (Part 3) Sea Cucumbers and Starfish V12765

This footage from Dive 3 was shot with a GoPro Hero2 mounted to the home-made LED light rig. The terrain looked somewhat like a desert at first, but upon closer inspection there was TONS of life and activity. Among the most interesting were Sea Cucumbers - the yellowish-brown cylindrical creatures which resemble, well, Cucmbers (with spikes)! They also look a lot like some sort of slug. These critters slowly move around the ocean floor and essentially vacuum-up sand and sediment, filtering out all the nutrients, and expelling the rest. Feathery 5-armed Starfish (Brittle Stars) were everywhere, as well as various plants, small fish and strange tubular structures, the source of which I am still unsure of. It's amazing how different the ecosystem and fauna can be from one area to the next, separated by only short distances. You don't have to go far to see something new!

These scenes were filmed on the ENE edge of Anacapa Island off of the California coast in about 50 feet of water. Thanks to Chris Biggerstaff for another great day of diving aboard the Katie Rae! See his adventures here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMyP55YoVewxeYEVsq4mOCw
