In Kona, on the Big Island in Hawaii, I had a chance to scuba with giant manta rays. We saw a few during the day, but after dark more than 13 came out to play! It was one of the most incredible dives I have ever done!
I watched from a seated position as 13 giant manta rays danced and feasted on plankton over my head. They return to this same spot every evening, which is illuminated by the dive boats. The "campfire" illumination lures plankton, and the mantas have grown accustomed to human scuba divers. Normally in the wild you would never see so many mantas together in one location.
Sometimes these enormous rays would charge towards me, and I could see down their cavernous throats. What a thrill!
According the the dive shop, Big Island Divers, diving with giant manta rays on the Big Island is one of the most popular dives in the world (second only to diving with great white sharks in South Africa).
