Scuba Diving in The Azores



Diving day and night, in sandy, rocky or mixed seabeds, in caves or shipwrecks... The potential of the Azores is almost endless in terms of diving spots and types of diving, offering opportunities beginners to professionals. The adventure may start with a simple snorkelling trip in order to enjoy the stunning marine life of the archipelago's crystal clear waters. On the other hand, diving in an ocean bank guarantees both an adrenalin rush and lifelong memories.

PLEASANT TEMPERATURE

Throughout the year, the sea temperature varies ranges from 17º C to 24º C. Temperature is, in fact, higher towards the end of the summer season. In winter it is common for the sea temperature to be higher than the air temperature.

UNIQUE VISIBILITY

The visibility of the seas of the Azores can be as deep as 30 metres. Visibility varies according to the time of the year and the specific weather conditions of each day, and it is best during the summer months.

RESERVED SITES

Although most spots are opened for diving, there are some Marine Reserves that are diving restricted areas according to the time of the year. The diving centres have the required information on the availability of the spots.

SEA CONDITIONS

The south coasts of the islands have better conditions for diving. However, when the sea is favourable, the north coast can also be a pleasant experience as long as safety measures are kept in mind.

When you choose organised diving via a diving or nautical centre, the insurance is mandatory and it is already included in the price.

DIVING BAPTISM

Those who have never practised diving are also able to enjoy the waters of the Azores. On various islands, the diving centres offer a diving baptism. Besides it being an unforgettable experience, the door is also opened to the underwater wealth of the Archipelago.
